To provide leading newborn screening education to ensure every well newborn around the globe is accurately screened prior to discharge.
Joint Venture
The Newborn Screening Education project is a joint venture between the Virginia Department of Health and the University of Virginia Office of Continuing Medical Education to provide healthcare professionals and institutions nationwide with certified continuing medical education opportunities to ensure that every well newborn is accurately screened prior to discharge from the hospital.
Patient safety, patient satisfaction, nurse competency, and budget concerns at hospitals and heath systems were strong considerations when designing our newborn screening CE.
The mission of the Virginia Department of Health’s Newborn Screening Services is to reduce and prevent disabilities and death resulting from disorders detectable through newborn screening, and to provide for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up genetic services for families at risk.
The Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) Screening Project was established to provide support and education to healthcare providers to ensure that every well newborn is accurately screened for CCHD with pulse oximetry before discharge.
This project is/was supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under grant number H46MC24062 and title “Genetics Services Project” for grant amount $298,713.
